In 2014, The Englert Theatre celebrated 10 years of operation since its renovation in 2004.
In celebration of this anniversary, the theater hosted several celebration events including dinners, readings, and concerts. Poet and former Iowa City resident Dora Malech was commissioned by the Englert to write original poetry for the anniversary, focusing on the theme of the entire celebration: gratitude. Without the efforts and continuing support of the community, the Englert wouldn’t exist as it is today.
Dora Malech’s poetry has appeared in The New Yorker, Poetry, Tin House, and Best New Poets, among numerous other publications. She is the author of two books of poems, Say So and Shore Ordered Ocean. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she also taught at the Workshop and directed the Iowa Youth Writing Project. She has received awards for her writing that include a Ruth Lilly Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation and a Writers’ Fellowship at the Civitella Ranieri in Italy. She recently moved to Baltimore, Maryland, joining the faculty of The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University.
