Description

The Englert's free Community Spotlight Series shines its light on local up-and-comers Caleb Engstrom, Highway Shelter and Plane Crashes & Slow Dancing.

Caleb Engstrom
www.calebengstrom.com
Dropped into college. Dropped out of college. Dropped a self-produced and previously self-released album with Right Place Records. Dropped some mouths while performing over 100 shows in the past year on 3 independently booked tours. Hailing currently from Iowa City, IA (having dropped back in this spring to the University of Iowa), Caleb doesn't have great expectations for overnight success, but he is more than willing to pay his dues. "I guess with all of this," he says, "I'm just trying to do something honest."

Highway Shelter
www.myspace.com/highwaysheltertunes
Highway Shelter is a unique mixture of the raw blues/funk and a new version of traditional folk/rock. This music ventures through soul driven lyrics and intricate rhythms to envoke the best out of its listeners. Highway Shelter's sound is never really comparable to other artists. Gabriel Middaugh's voice is well... different, and whether it is "good or bad," he takes his job seriously - but only to put smiles on faces in the crowd.

Plane Crashes and Slow Dancing
www.myspace.com/planecrashesandslowdancing
Plane Crashes and Slow Dancing [Luke Fairchild. Kate Feldmann. Abby Black] was formed by former relations of members in other bands. Eventually they all became "Something Rone" which is now changed to their current band name "Plane Crashes and Slow Dancing." They have played shows around the Iowa City area including the Mill, West Music Battle of the Bands (where they got 1st place), North Liberty Battle of The Bands and the Cedar Rapids Jan Jam. They have also been interviewed by radio station Z 102.9 when they were known as "So Does She" . "We argue that this will be the final name change," they say, "for we have had 5 names in the past two years."
